LOPEZ — In the small community of Lopez in Sullivan County the mercury is dropping.

Like the rest of the northeast, a cold front moved through here.

“We’ve been here a long time. It doesn’t bother us a lot,” said resident Norman Vaughan.

The cold is something folks in Lopez know a thing or two about.

“Two years ago or was it last year? We had 28 below so zero degrees is nothing, 20 degrees right now is just a regular day,” laughed Bryan Brady.

Brady is the sheriff of Sullivan County and proud Lopez resident.

“I love the cold. I used to live in Dushore, but it got too warm, that’s why I moved to Lopez,” said Brady.

The owner of Winterland Winery in Lopez said folks around Lopez know how to prepare for and deal with the chilly temperatures.

They stock up on water, batteries, wood and oil and enjoy it when the cold comes.

“When people react at 20 degrees, it’s like a warm spell up here. There’s a lot of snowmobiling, the toboggan run will hopefully be open at Eagles Mere, winter camping and hiking,” said Ann Marie Kopec.

On a more serious note, the folks in Lopez say they also know to always keep a blanket and other supplies in their vehicles in case they get stranded in the cold weather.

This cold weather is expected to stick around for a while. A warm up could be on the way next week.
